Weeks of demonstrations held in the wake of the death of Chinese leader Hu Yaobang's death lead to a violent crackdown by the People's Liberation Army in Beijing. Troops opened fire on protesters in an attempt to clear the square and, although the precise death toll is not known, it is believed that between 500 and 3,000 people could have lost their lives.
