In 1982, Argentinian forces invaded the disputed British territories of The Falkland Islands (known as Islas Malvinas in Spanish-speaking countries), South Georgia and the Sandwich Islands, prompting British forces to attempt to reclaim the islands through amphibious naval assault. The conflict ended after two and a half months with the surrender of Argentinian forces, having prompted a surge in nationalist sentiment in both countries.
