Singapore's first light art festival for youths and young adults kicked off on 23 June as Luminance! 2012 lit up *SCAPE with 27 whimsical art works and performances. This is in a lead-up to the annual SHINE Youth Festival, which celebrates youth in the month of July.

17 art works at Luminance! are from public submissions by youth artists, with the rest by artistes such as Mr Sun Yi-Li and Ms Angela Chong. Three French guest artistes also joined in the festival to exhibit their artworks, such as a pixel wall atop the roof of McDonalds and a projection of Chang Er, the goddess of the moon.

Supported by the National Youth Council, artworks are curated from Levels 1 to 5 throughout the compound with the festival theme of 'Dreams and Aspirations'. There will also be 3 community projects which will be created out of recycled materials, including one project involving rehabilitating psychiatric patients at Simei Care Centre.

Some of the artworks are helping to raise awareness about environment sustainability, by turning unwanted cardboards and used milk cartons into an orchid installation and a Tron cycle respectively. Luminance! is funded by NYC's Youth Development Grant, which focuses on aspects such as encouraging social innovation.

Luminance! 2012 runs until 1 July, with lights coming on from 7pm to 11pm nightly.
