Egypt declares state of emergency

Egypt declares state of emergency

Egyptian President Mohamed Morsi has declared a state of emergency in three cities on the Suez Canal.

The measures would come into effect in the provinces of Port Said, Suez and Ismailiya for 30 days.

They were introduced after a second day of rioting rocked Port Said onSunday.

It was sparked by death sentences handed down by a court on Saturday against some of those convicted over deadly football riots last year.

Some 31 people have been killed and more than 460 injured since Saturday.

For more on what led to the present clashes, and its wider implications on the ongoing political crisis in Egypt, 938LIVE's Reeta Raman spoke to James Dorsey, a Senior Fellow at the S Rajaratnam School of International Studies.
