A nun has been shocked to give birth to a baby boy in Italy, claiming she had no idea she was pregnant.

The 31-year-old, who hails from El Salvador, told local reporters she thought her abdominal pains were stomach cramps.

She gave birth in the central city of Rieti, with the baby weighed at 7.7lbs.

The newborn has been named Francesco after the current Pope Francis.

The sister apparently at first denied the doctors' prognosis that she was about to give birth, reportedly telling medics: "It's not possible, I'm a nun."

She was quoted by Italy's Ansa news agency as later saying: "I did not know I was pregnant. I only felt a stomach pain."

The nun is expected to have to leave her convent, the Little Disciples of Jesus order in Rieti, after breaking her vow of chastity.

The mayor of Rieti, Simone Petrangeli, has said the city will be offering her assistance should she need it.
