At least one person has died and around 500,000 people have been urged to evacuate after a strong typhoon brought torrential rain and powerful winds to southwest Japan’s Okinawa island chain.

Typhoon Neoguri has weakened from its original super typhoon status, but is still wreaking havoc, bringing gusts of more than 250km/h (155 mph), and causing the cancellation of hundreds of flights in Japan, as well as emergency rain and high seas warnings.
