George 'Dubya' started off as more of a bumbling politician than a macho one, but the 9/11 terrorist attacks in New York seemed to free his wild west spirit. He promised, rather optimistically, that his administration would "rid the world of evil-doers". If you weren't with America, he said, "you are with the terrorists." When asked about Osama bin Laden he called to mind old wild west posters that read "Wanted: Dead or Alive".

He had other macho traits, of course. A love of horses, ranching, golf and landing on aircraft carriers in jet fighters.
