'Teddy' Roosevelt was an American president who was also in possession of a 'robust' masculinity. Roosevelt, who was president between 1901 and 1909, had been a rancher in the 'badlands' of the Dakotas before running for the country's highest office, as well as leader of the Rough Riders, a voluntary cavalry unit that operated in Cuba during the Spanish-American war.

He was also a historian, hunter, explorer, conservationist and cowboy. In office his macho image was secured by the phrase he used to sum up his foreign policy: "speak softly and carry a big stick".
