I like Palmer as a Speaker: WP chief Low Thia Khiang

Speaking to reporters on the sidelines of a Meet-the-People Session on the same day the news broke, Workers’ Party chief Low Thia Khiang said he was “very surprised” by Palmer’s resignation.

Low described Palmer as a well-balanced" Speaker of Parliament, who managed parliamentary affairs "very well and very efficiently".

"He has also given members of the opposition sufficient time to engage the front bench so personally. I quite like him as a Speaker... it's unfortunate that he has resigned,” Low said, before adding that in the selection of political candidates, no process was foolproof.

Low also shared that it was not fair to draw a comparison between Palmer’s situation and that of former WP MP Yaw Shin Leong, who was sacked by the party due to personal indiscretions.

He added that his party is ready to contest in the event a by-election in Punggol East is called.
