Who's the woman behind the fall from grace of former MP Michael Palmer?
Was she also seeing another man?
Different versions of the Michael Palmer scandal have surfaced as more sources – most who claimed to be close to Laura Ong – rose to offer their side of the story, fueling speculations and sparking even more debate.
Ong, 33, is the woman at the centre of the prominent politician’s shocking resignation on Wednesday, when he admitted to an extramarital affair with a People’s Association staff member.
A grassroots director before she resigned on Dec 10, Ong was reportedly concurrently dating another man, who could have then found out about her affair with Palmer, and decided to give her away.
A local tabloid on Thursday published several screenshots of intimate message exchanges allegedly between Palmer and Ong, which it received from an anonymous source last Saturday.
Ong’s alleged boyfriend, Andy Lim, a logistics manager in his early 30s, would have been one of the few who had access to Ong’s mobile phone, sources told a local paper.
The pair was also said to have been in a “serious relationship” for close to two years, during which Ong also dated Palmer for more than a year. They reportedly met when Lim was a grassroots volunteer at Punggol South ward.
The paper also reported that the couple had recently posted photos on Facebook of their trip to the newly-opened Legoland in Johor Bahru. Both of their Facebook and LinkedIn pages have since been deleted.
Laura Ong’s husband: She’s a good wife
Meanwhile, in another twist, Ong’s husband told a Chinese daily on Friday that Ong is a “good wife” and offered nothing more.
Ong is understood to have separated from her businessman-husband, 32-year-old Chen Zhi Kuang, in 2008, after about two years of marriage. They no longer live together.
