Three months after disgraced Workers' Party (WP) MP Yaw Shin Leong was booted out of the party, a Writ of Election was issued for the vacant seat in parliament - officially paving the way to a by-election that will commence on May 26.

The "Battle of Hougang", as the media has dubbed it, marks a historical point in Singapore's political history as the first-ever by-election that is called as a result of an expulsion.

The two main parties - People's Action Party (PAP) and Workers' Party (WP) have since unveiled their candidates with Desmond Choo from the PAP and Png Eng Huat on WP's front.

Meanwhile, the Elections Department has also announced this morning (May 15) that it has issued four Political Donation Certificates for the upcoming Hougang by-election. The recipients were People's Action Party candidate Desmond Choo, Png Eng Huat of the Workers' Party, former WP General Election candidate Poh Lee Guan and independent Zeng Guoyuan, alias Chan Hock Seng.

Will PAP turn the tables and reclaim Hougang constituency as its own after 20 years? Or will WP's strong fort in Hougang prove to be an impregnable fortress?

As the nation prepares herself for the results come May 26, xinmsn takes you through the key players in the "Battle of Hougang".
