Yee Jenn Jong wants changes made to Child Development Account
Non-Constituency Member of Parliament Yee Jenn Jong wants the Child Development Account - a savings account under the Baby Bonus Scheme - to be enhanced.
Currently, the government matches parents' deposits dollar-for-dollar, up to a cap of $6,000 to $18,000 depending on the child's age.
But Mr Yee says this system rewards the rich and withholds funds from the poor, who cannot afford to allocate as much.
So instead of the fund matching system, Mr Yee proposed that the quantum for each Child Development Account be standardised, at $10,000 per child.
Speaking in Parliament, Mr Yee added that student care facilities in schools have to be expanded more quickly, to help weaker students before and after school.
He also suggested reducing class sizes, especially in primary schools.
"These smaller class sizes will allow teachers to better understand individual students which will be essential as we move towards holistic character and value-based education system. it'll also make classroom management easier for teachers who would otherwise not be able to pay attention to weaker students."
