SINGAPORE: Workers’ Party (WP) candidate for the Punggol East by—election, Lee Li Lian said having another WP member in Parliament will strengthen the voice of the opposition party.
Speaking to reporters on Sunday after a morning walkabout at Rivervale Plaza, Ms Lee said that it means more airtime for the party to bring up issues on behalf of Singaporeans and this, she said will definitely make a difference.
Ms Lee refuted talk that having the WP members in Parliament did not make a difference, saying they have done an excellent job.
"With one more voice inside there (in Parliament), an opposition voice, an alternative voice inside there, we are able to better push, push them (the ruling People’s Action Party) harder."
Ms Lee was accompanied on her walkabout by Aljunied GRC and Hougang SMC MPs, including party chief Low Thia Khiang as well as Nominated MP Gerald Giam.
Mr Low said that he will ask voters to strengthen the WP representation in Parliament.
He added that he has noted Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong’s comments after his walkabout in Punggol East on Saturday and will speak about them at a WP rally.
PM Lee had urged residents of Punggol East to vote for what they believed in and not to vote tactically.
Mr Low said: "We are a rational and responsible party. We want to see a better Singapore, we are not, we don’t intend to cripple the government or being unreasonable with the government."
