And it's never a good idea to share things on social media when you're feeling emotional.
That's the message of a guide for social media launched by Facebook and the Media Literacy Council.
The three-page guide is targetted at teenagers, parents and teachers, providing them with practical tools and tips about online safety practices.
It says while social media like Facebook has made it easy for people to share their thoughts, photos or latest favourite video, their online behaviour can often have unintended consequences.
