SINGAPORE: Defence Minister Ng Eng Hen said there is a need to strengthen the Singaporean core, while at the same time recognising that there is a need for foreign workers.
He was asked to comment on the response to the Population White Paper at the Toa Payoh Central annual Lunar New Year celebrations.
He said: "We heard Singaporeans clearly. We need to work with Singaporeans, serve them, improve Singapore, improve their quality of life. It is very clear we cannot have as many foreign workers come in as before. I mean that’s very clear. I think we have a lot of work to do. We can only achieve this if we work together."
Dr Ng, who is also MP for Bishan—Toa Payoh GRC, presented awards to long—serving grassroots leaders on Saturday evening.
He said he plans to have a national conversation session with young Singaporeans at Toa Payoh Library next month.
He also said more than 170 runners will climb stairs across five blocks in Toa Payoh Central to raise funds next Sunday.
The money will go toward starting a Youth Enrichment Fund to help less fortunate students pursue their interests in areas such as arts, language and sports.
