Singapore's Defence Minister Ng Eng Hen says he welcomes the apology from Indonesian Armed Forces chief General Moeldoko over the naming of an Indonesian warship after two marines who carried out the bombing of MacDonald House in Singapore in 1965.
In a statement, Dr Ng says the apology is a constructive gesture to improve bilateral defence ties between the two countries.
The Minister says the Singapore Armed Forces will reciprocate General Moeldoko's positive intentions by resuming bilateral cooperation and activities with its Indonesian counterpart so as to strengthen the mutual understanding and friendship that has been built up over many decades.
The General in an interview with Channel NewsAsia said that the Indonesian military had meant no ill-will, and had not intended to stir up emotions in Singapore.
He said the episode has been a learning process, and he is confident that future ties between the two militaries would grow even stronger.
