Spike in number of HFMD cases caused by EV—71 virus

SINGAPORE: Singapore is seeing a spike in the number of Hand, Foot and Mouth Disease (HFMD) cases caused by Enterovirus—71.

Also known as EV—71, this strain of the virus is known to be more lethal.

In July and August this year, seven out of every 100 cases of HFMD were caused by EV—71.

EV—71 has been associated with illnesses that can cause death in children, such as meningitis.

It can also cause complications, such as neurological and respiratory problems.

Health authorities said they are concerned about this upward trend, and are monitoring the situation.

Associate Professor Leo Yee Sin, head, Infectious Disease Clinic, Tan Tock Seng Hospital, said: "There is no specific anti—viral treatment, particularly for EV—71 because of the complications. I think it is important to highlight to the general public, to pay special attention to Hand, Foot and Mouth Disease, take care of their personal hygiene, environmental hygiene, isolate children with the clinical manifestations, and minimise the transmission of the virus."
