Social workers, educators & government must link arms to better meet society's needs

Acting Minister for Community, Youth and Sports Chan Chun Sing has called for a concerted effort from social workers, educators and the government to better meet the needs of society.

Speaking at a symposium marking the 60th anniversary of the Department of Social Work at the National University of Singapore, Mr Chan stressed the importance of the closer tie-up amid a rapidly changing social landscape.

Mr Chan also highlighted the key role played by education in getting social workers prepared for the task ahead.

He added that the programme in NUS provides one such platform.

In its sixty years, the department has trained hundreds of individuals for a career in social work.

And to encourage more to be part of the profession, Mr Chan said his ministry will invest more funding to help raise the salaries of social workers.
