SMRT to increase its staff for North-South and East-West lines; search for new CEO reportedly narrowed down to 3 candidates

SMRT has hired some 200 (actual 216) new staff for the North-South and East-West lines (E NEWS: from January to June 2012

They will be deployed in train business, maintenance and the various stations.

SMRT is looking to employ another 230 staff in the next six months.

The new hires are employed to cope with the expanding network and the increase in passenger capacity.

As of this March, SMRT has an overall staff strength of at least 6900, with 53 percent of them in the operations and maintenance team.

SMRT is also said to be currently looking at three potential candidates to take up its new Chief Executive Officer position.

According to some sources, all three candidates have engineering backgrounds.
