Smart Nation Platform to support Singapore's vision to be a Smart Nation

Minister for Communications and Information, Yaacob Ibrahim, has announced a Smart Nation Platform that will support Singapore's goal to become a Smart Nation.

Speaking at the opening of the week-long Infocomm Media Business Exchange or IMBX 2014,

Dr Yaacob says the platform is to further the government's capabilities in pervasive connectivity.

This is done by building new infrastructure and common technical architecture to support an innovative ecosystem across the nation.

Dr Yaacob says the Smart Nation Platform will focus on three areas - "Connect" , "Collect and Comprehend".

Under Connect, the government will strengthen the communications backbone.

The current connectivity infrastructure will be extended through the progressive deployment of Above Ground Boxes and the Heterogeneous Network or HetNet.

These will provide a speedy, secure, and cost-effective nationwide communication infrastructure.

Under "Collect and Comprehend", the government plans to roll out an operating system where public agencies could be plugged in to an essential sensor data.

This is to help gain insights that will enable the government to better anticipate citizens' needs and help in better delivery of services.

Dr Yaacob says this data will be protected and managed before being shared.
