SingTel says it has robust backup systems to reduce impact of service outage
SingTel has given assurance that it has a very robust system in place to minimise the impact of outages during adverse situations.
It was responding to media queries about its backup systems for the Bukit Panjang telephone exchange.
A fire broke out in one of the building's fibre chambers yesterday afternoon (09/10), damaging nearly half of the 300-plus cables in the room, but SingTel says the exchange has three fibre chambers.
This means it was able to divert some of its affected services to the other two chambers that were not affected by the fire.
SingTel says that it also replicates some of its electronic switches to ensure that it can divert services quickly when required.
Unfortunately, the fire at the Bukit Panjang exchange caused physical damage to the cables, and the damage must be physically repaired by hand.
Some 100 SingTel engineers have been working round the clock to repair the cables.
They aim to restore all services by 7am tomorrow.
