Singapore's labour productivity fell by 2.6 per cent in 2012 - a reversal of the growth of 1.3 per cent the previous year.

In the fourth quarter of last year, productivity fell by 2.5 per cent.

This was the fifth consecutive quarter of decline.

The drop was broad-based, with manufacturing, construction and services sectors all experiencing negative growth.

The Ministry of Trade and Industry attributes the decline in productivity numbers to the country's slower economic growth over the past two years.

The ministry's Economic Survey for 2012 which was released today also showed that nominal wages rose by 2.3 per cent.

However, this was the lowest growth in three years.

On a more positive note, total employment increased by nearly 130 thousand last year.

Unemployment remained unchanged at 2 per cent.
