Singaporean student stabbed to death in Brisbane hotel room
A Singaporean student was found dead in a hotel room in Brisbane, Australia, early Tuesday morning.
According to Australian news reports, 27-year-old Meenatchi Narayanan was stabbed in a third-floor room at Travelodge hotel in the suburb of Upper Mount Gravatt.
The Australian reported on its website that screams were heard coming from the room and police forced their way in and found Meenatchi dead around 12.30am.
A 31-year-old man, an Indian from South Africa, was also found in the room and was suspected to have stabbed her in the stomach.
The man, who also had stab wounds, which were suspected to be self-inflicted, has been taken to Princess Alexandra Hospital where he remains under police guard.
According to reports, a knife was seized at the scene and it did not appear that a third party was involved.
Police are investigating if Meenatchi, a former Christchurch Secondary School student, was to be involved in an arranged marriage, reported The Australian.
The Singapore Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) said it was aware of the case and that the Singapore High Commission in Canberra will provide consular assistance to the next of kin.
