SINGAPORE: Singapore will open a consulate—general in Muscat, Oman later this year.
Senior Minister of State for Foreign Affairs Masagos Zulkifli said with the new consulate—general, Singapore will have diplomatic presence on the ground in Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Qatar and Oman.
He said Singapore is actively expanding its reach to emerging markets in the Middle East.
But he added that the focus remains on Gulf countries which are stable.
Last year, trade with Middle East countries reached S$75.9 billion.
Mr Masagos said these engagements go beyond economics.
He said: "There remains keen interest to learn from Singapore’s developmental experience. For instance, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi Sheikh Mohamad bin Zayed Al Nahyan instructed officials to visit Singapore just a few months ago to understand our water management strategies, a strategic issue for UAE."
