Singapore, South Korea reaffirm defence ties

The defence ministers of Singapore and South Korea have reaffirmed the warm and friendly defence relations between their countries.

Singapore's Minister for Defence Dr Ng Eng Hen and South Korea's Minister of National Defence Kim Kwan-Jin acknowledged the value of the cooperation and exchanges between the two armed forces in areas such as visits, port calls, cross-attendance of courses and mutual logistics support.

During their meeting on Thursday morning, they also expressed commitment to multilateral cooperation under the auspices of the ASEAN Defence Ministers' Meeting-Plus (ADMM-Plus).

They expressed strong support for the ADMM-Plus Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief and Military Medicine exercise to be held in Brunei in 2013.

The two leaders also discussed bilateral defence cooperation and regional security developments.

Dr Ng, who's in South Korea on an introductory, inspected a Guard of Honour with Mr Kim before their meeting.

He also visited South Korea's Army Special Warfare Command on Thursday afternoon.

Singapore's Ministry of Defence said Singapore and South Korea interact regularly through policy dialogues and exchanges of visits by defence officials.

Both countries signed the Memorandum of Understanding on Cooperation in the Field of Defence in December 2009 to formalise their defence interactions and broaden defence cooperation.
