Singapore PR among the 27 arrested for Little India riot

Police have released the nationalities of the 27 people arrested for rioting with dangerous weapons in Little India last night. 

24 are Indian nationals, 2 are Bangladeshi nationals, and one is a Singaporean permanent resident. 

All of them are between 23 and 45 years of age. 

The police say that as at 12pm, 22 police officers and 5 auxiliary police officers have sought treatment at hospital for injuries they sustained in the riot. 

All of them have since been discharged from hospital. 

The riot involving some 400 people broke out after a fatal accident involving a private bus and a pedestrian at 9.23pm on Sunday. 

The driver of the private bus, a 55-year-old Singaporean, was conveyed conscious to the hospital. 

Police say the driver is assisting the Traffic Police with investigations into the accident. 

The accident victim, a 33-year-old Indian national was pronounced dead at the scene. 

Police have classified the traffic incident as Causing Death by Negligent Act 

Several vehicles were damaged during the riot, including 16 police vehicles. 

The damaged vehicles have been removed from Race Course Road and Hampshire Road, where the riot occurred. 

The roads were reopened to traffic at 6.45am.
