Singapore Power awards S$2 billion in contracts for its largest infrastructure project

Singapore Power has awarded S$2 billion in contracts for its largest infrastructure project to date.

Five construction firms will jointly undertake the project - to build two cross-island tunnels 60 metres below ground to house the country's power transmission cables.

The tunnels will be about 35 kilometres long.

They'll allow for the quick replacement of cables in future and help ensure reliable and secure power supply.

Construction will begin at the end of the year 2012 and will end in 2018.
