SINGAPORE: Singapore "strongly condemns the brutal murder" of American journalist Steven Sotloff by the Islamic State (IS), a Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) spokesman said in a statement released on Thursday (Sep 4).

A video, made public on Sep 2, showed the beheading of Mr Sotloff by the jihadist group. The MFA extended condolences to Mr Sotloff's family and loved ones, and reiterated its call for all IS hostages to be released immediately.

"(IS) and what it represents, is a real and present danger to countries in the Middle East as well as the rest of the world," the MFA spokesman said. "There is a critical need for the international community to work closely together to counter this threat."

Mr Sotloff is the second American reporter whose murder has been publicised via video by IS. The first was James Foley who was executed in similar fashion last month, allegedly by the same masked man. In the wake of this latest brutality, US President Barack Obama has called for an international front against IS, and Britain and France are reportedly considering military action. - CNA/xy
