Shortening or removing 30-month debarment period

Shortening or removing 30-month debarment period

MP for Punggol East Single Member Constituency Lee Li Lian urges the government to pay more attention to the needs of divorcees.

Speaking in Parliament, she noted the plight faced by divorcees in search of housing.

After selling their flats, they can only apply for subsidised rental housing after a 30-month debarment period.

Ms Lee suggests shortening or removing this period for divorcees with children.

She also proposes increasing the number of three-room flats under the parenthood provisional housing scheme - an initiative to provide affordable temporary housing.

That's because take-up rates for four- and five-room flats are far lower, due to the high rental costs.

"The breakdown of a marriage is difficult enough for most parties, especially where there are children involved. What state should do is to make it easier for them to find housing so they can move on in lives and provide their children with an element of stability amidst an already tough situation."
