SINGAPORE: With Lunar New Year round the corner, the demand for cleaning and housekeeping services has gone up.
But the shortage of workers has posed a problem for cleaning companies. Some businesses have turned away about 10 per cent of requests. Employees have also been asked to work longer hours.
With the tightening of the foreign manpower policy, and a shortage of local cleaners, companies said they’ve also had to increase the pay of its permanent and contract staff.
Productivity also has to be improved.
But employers said choosing to mechanise has its limitations.
Operations manager at Comfy Homes, Gavin Lee said: "With limited space and constraints we can’t bring in those industrial kind of cleaning equipments to help us in the cleaning. End of the day, we have to use our labour to have the cleaning done."
