SINGAPORE: The Land Transport Authority (LTA) said on Thursday (May 29) it has awarded the first two of four contracts under the Walk2Ride programme to construct sheltered walkways around 59 MRT stations.
The first contract, which covers 24 MRT stations in the north-western part of Singapore, was awarded to Singapore Piling & Civil Engineering–Shincon Industrial Joint Venture for S$80.3 million, and the second contract, which covers 35 MRT stations in the north-eastern part of Singapore, was awarded to Planar One & Associates for S$76.3 million.
The walkways will provide sheltered connectivity to all developments within a 400-metre radius of the MRT stations, LTA said. Works for the two contracts are expected to start in the fourth quarter of 2014 and will complete progressively by 2018.
Both contracts also include the provision of signage and locality maps. The LTA and the Health Promotion Board are also collaborating to integrate health information at rest-stops located along the sheltered walkways.
The LTA has also called two more tenders to extend the programme to another 29 MRT stations, 38 LRT stations and one bus interchange.
When completed, the Walk2Ride programme will add more than 200km of sheltered walkways – four times more than the current 46km, the LTA said. - CNA/cy
