Set up support pillars to support other aspects of aging population: Chen Show Mao

Workers' Party MP Chen Show Mao has urged the government to look into other aspects of an ageing population.

Speaking in Parliament today, Mr Chen says the elderly are a repository of social and cultural capital.

And they can be leveraged on to teach children traditional wisdoms and values.

He says one pillar of support could involve helping the elderly build on their social capital.

"Just like children who need to develop, and working adults who need to upgrade their skills, our elderly too need support and resources to continue growing, learning and developing."

A second is to support their caregivers - in the form of paid leave, flexible work arrangements, or CPF top-ups.

He says that's because their caregiving role often affects them financially, mentally and physically.

"Not because we want to monetise the act of caring for their loved ones, but to help ease some of the financial strains that may arise from their taking on such informal caregiving arrangements."

Mr Chen adds that investing in elderly Singaporeans will help Singapore become more inclusive.
