SCDF to step up checks during festive season to ensure fire safety
The Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) is stepping up checks on commercial buildings such as hotels and shopping centres during the festive period.
It wants to ensure that they comply with fire safety requirements, especially with more patrons and customers expected at these places during the year-end holidays.
Escape passageways should not be obstructed while fire exit doors should be kept accessible for use during emergencies.
The SCDF said overcrowding in building premises, especially public entertainment outlets such as discotheques and pubs, can hurt firefighting and rescue plans.
Those who flout fire safety rules can be fined up to $10,000 or can be sentenced to a jail term of up to six months.
