Samsonite luggage recall affects S’pore stock

SINGAPORE: US company Samsonite is pulling its Tokyo Chic range of luggage from stores worldwide. This includes its entire stock in Singapore as well.

The move comes after a Consumer Council in Hong Kong found high—levels of the chemical PAH in the side—carrying handles of this luggage range. PAH is an acronym for Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons.

It is a compound found in cigarette smoke that could potentially cause cancer.

The company said the recall will allow for the replacement of all side—carrying handles in the Tokyo Chic range with "new generation handles".

Customers who already own Tokyo Chic luggage can contact Samsonite to have the handles replaced.

Despite the recall, Samsonite said that independent test results indicate that the levels of PAH in the handles were much lower than initially reported by the Hong Kong Consumer Council. The company said its luggage products are safe for use.
