S’porean climbers conquer virgin peak in China
SINGAPORE: Two Singaporeans have become the first in the world to reach the peak of a mountain in southwest China.
In honour of Singapore, they have named the peak Sangay Ri or Lion Peak in Tibetan.
The Lion Peak, at 6,000 metres high, is located in Qinghai.
Explorers David Lim and Mohd Rozani took about eight hours to reach the peak and return to base camp.
Since 2005, Mr Lim has been scaling virgin peaks around the world.
There are now peaks with names like Ong Teng Cheong Peak and Temasek Peak.
Mr Lim says he has not thought of new names for future virgin peak expeditions.
On his latest bid, Mr Lim said he will hand in a report to the mountaineering journals of record.
These journals are published yearly, and aim to capture and verify information on all the significant ascents of the year. They include ascents of new peaks.
