SINGAPORE: The Reform Party (RP) has officially announced Kenneth Jeyaretnam as its candidate for the Punggol East by—election.
RP announced this at a news conference outside Rivervale Plaza late on Tuesday evening.
The announcement comes a day before parties file their nomination papers, and just hours after Singapore Democratic Party (SDP) announced their withdrawal from the by—election.
Mr Jeyaretnam, who is also the party’s secretary—general, said sentiment from residents on the party contesting has been largely welcoming.
He also commented on the by—election being a multi—cornered fight, and on the party’s chances.
Mr Jeyaretnam, who last contested in West Coast GRC during the 2011 General Election, said: "We wouldn’t have gone into this unless we believed that we can perform for the residents of Punggol, so we’re not very worried about that. An overwhelming proportion of people welcomed us to Punggol East, and they knew us and they were glad to see us contesting."
