Residents in Punggol report brown-coloured water

SINGAPORE: Residents in Punggol reported having brown-coloured tap water for a few hours on Thursday (June 12). One person who called MediaCorp's news hotline said Housing and Development Board (HDB) blocks with the numbers 200+ and 600+ were affected.

Singapore’s national water agency PUB said it received reports of discoloured water from 2pm. This was two hours after it had carried out valve operations on a transmission water main along the Tampines Expressway (TPE) for the connection of a newly laid pipeline.

"These valve operations caused some re-suspension of sediments in the pipeline, resulting in the discolouration of the water. These sediments are minerals in tap water which settled down over time in the pipes," a PUB statement said.

On Friday, the agency said in a Facebook post at 12.50pm that the issue had been resolved. It said officers flushed the water mains through the night and by early Friday morning, the water had cleared up. PUB will continue to work with the Town Council to check the water tanks and will flush the tanks if required, it added.

PUB also advised customers who were still getting discoloured water to let their taps run to clear the water in the service pipe – the section between PUB mains and home taps. Those who need help can contact PUB's 24-hour call centre at 1800-284-6600, it said. - CNA/ly/cy
