It’s Nomination Day for the hotly contested Punggol East Single Member Constituency (SMC) today (Jan 16).
The by-election was set in place when President Tony Tan Keng Yam issued the Writ of Election last Wednesday after former MP Michael Palmer resigned over an extramarital affair.
The battleground of Punggol East SMC looks set for a multi-cornered fight and by-election hopefuls will submit their nomination papers between 11am and 12pm today at North Vista Secondary School nomination centre.
Under parliamentary election procedures, one hour is set aside for the filing of nomination papers and another half hour for any objections to be raised. The Returning Officer, Mr Yam Ah Mee, is expected to declare the results of the nomination process by 1pm Wednesday.
The contenders include Koh Poh Koon (People's Action Party); Lee Li Lian (The Workers’ Party); Desmond Lim (Singapore Democratic Alliance); Kenneth Jeyaretnam (Reform party); as well as independent parties Mr Ooi Boon Ewe and Mr Zeng Guoyan. The Singapore Democratic Party, who was set to announce its candidate, said on Tuesday afternoon that they will not contest in the by-election on Jan 26.
