SINGAPORE: The deadline to apply for Political Donation Certificates — a prerequisite for standing in the Punggol East by—election — ended at 1pm Saturday.
The Elections Department said it had received 14 applications for the certificates by the close of application, adding that it will leave it to the individuals to say whether they have applied for a certificate.
The Singapore Democratic Party (SDP) submitted two applications on Saturday, after having collected three sets of nomination forms on Thursday.
SDP chairman Mohamed Jufrie Mahmood arrived at the Elections Department at about 8.45am to hand in the applications.
Mr Jufrie did not say who the applications were for but he said the party’s candidate for the by—election will be revealed soon.
The SDP was the only party that had turned up at the Elections Department on Saturday.
Others which have submitted the application include the People’s Action Party (PAP), the Singapore Democratic Alliance (SDA) and the Reform Party (RP).
PAP made the application on Friday through Member of Parliament for Chua Chu Kang GRC, Alex Yam.
RP chief Kenneth Jeyaretnam also made one submission on Friday.
SDA said it handed in two submissions on Friday.
The Workers’ Party (WP) also turned up at the Elections Department on Friday. But it’s unclear if WP members handed in the application while they were there.
Its members, Hougang MP Png Eng Huat and organising secretary Ng Swee Bee, didn’t reveal any details to the media.
It’s also unclear if independent parties Mr Ooi Boon Ewe, Mr Zeng Guoyang and former Singapore People’s Party member Mr Benjamin Pwee have done so.
