SINGAPORE: The Land Transport Authority (LTA) said there will be a 20-per cent increase in the fleet of public buses by the end of this year.

All 550 buses under the Bus Service Enhancement Programme (BSEP) will hit the roads. More than half are already in operation.

The LTA said that for commuters, this should mean better connectivity, less crowding and shorter waiting times.

Transport Minister Lui Tuck Yew also launched the second City Direct Bus service this year.

Bus service 652 links Ang Mo Kio to the Central Business District (CBD) and is run by a private operator.

The first service, Jurong West City Direct Bus Service, was launched last year.

David Loh, owner of Ren Quan Transport, said: "Our company has extra capacity. LTA's new route is compatible with our work schedule. After sending students to school, we run the feeder bus service."

Later this month, two more City Direct bus services will begin operations, sending commuters from Sengkang and Bukit Batok to the CBD. These buses will have fewer stops and travel on expressways, and are designed to ease the peak hour crowd.

By the end of February, seven of these City Direct bus routes will be in operation, serving commuters from HDB estates like Sembawang, Ang Mo Kio, Bukit Batok and Jurong. - CNA/xq
