SINGAPORE: National water body PUB has geared up efforts in drainage maintenance and monitoring.

The aim is to keep the drains flowing and minimise the risks of flash floods during the coming northeast monsoon.

Inspections at major construction worksites have been stepped up to check for obstructions in the drains.

By the end this year, CCTVs will be installed at 56 new locations to monitor surface drains.

PUB has also started an initiative to replace scupper holes or drain inlets at flood prone areas and hotspots.

The installation is expected to be completed by September 2013.

In addition, PUB has distributed flood advisories to close to 500 residential units and shophouses in the central, western and eastern regions.

These are low—lying areas, some of which are also subject to tidal influence.

The Meteorological Service Singapore says Singapore can expect the start of the rainy season in the later part of November.

In addition to the regular weather forecast, it will issue warnings through the media when heavy rain or prolonged monsoon rain is expected.
