Protection of individual data to be enhanced with new Personal Protection Data Bill

The Ministry of Information, Communications and the Arts has introduced the new Personal Data Protection Bill.

The law aims to protect the personal data of individuals.

Under the new law, the ministry will regulate the collection, use and disclosure of personal data by organisations by imposing obligations on organisations to safeguard the personal data in their possessions or under their control.

The Bill requires that the individual be informed of the purposes and also that the organisation must not impose conditions for consent beyond what is reasonably required to provide a product or service to the individual.

Also, consent must not be obtained by deceptive or misleading practices.

The Bill will be debated at the next sitting of Parliament.
