Professionals prefer learning new skills to pay rise or promotion: survey

Singapore professionals place a higher value on the opportunity to learn new skills over a pay rise or promotion.

That's according to a survey conducted by recruiter, Kelly Services of 1,500 workers in Singapore earlier this year.

The survey showed that around half the respondents opted for new skills over advancing to a higher level in the organisation.

This is higher compared to their counterparts in Hong Kong (42%), Malaysia (43%), Thailand (37%), China (35%) and Indonesia (30%).

Vice President and Country Manager at Kelly Services Singapore, Mark Hall, said the findings highlight the importance of skills acquisition and career development for employees
who clearly see it as an investment in their future.

Around 4 in 10 employees in Singapore also said they had had a career development discussion with their employer in the past year.

And among those who had that discussion, more than half said it had been helpful in terms of helping them acquire new skills.
