SINGAPORE: President Tony Tan Keng Yam has paid tribute to prominent eye surgeon Professor Arthur Lim who died on Saturday (Aug 30). In a Facebook post, Dr Tan said Prof Lim was the father of modern ophthalmology in Singapore.
He added that Prof Lim was a man ahead of his time and Singapore has benefited tremendously from Prof Lim's foresight in setting up institutions such as the Singapore Eye Research Institute and the Singapore Eye Foundation.
"He was also the founding medical director of the Singapore National Eye Centre, which has trained generations of eye surgeons in Singapore," said Dr Tan. "Beyond the medical field, Professor Lim was active in philanthropy and community service. As Chairman of the Universities Endowment Fund, he raised substantial sums to enhance education in NUS and NTU. Many have benefited from Professor Lim's knowledge, care and generosity.
"Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and loved ones during this time of mourning," said Dr Tan. - CNA/ir
