Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong proposes several ways for the ASEAN grouping to continue to strengthen itself
At the ASEAN summit,
Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong has proposed several ways for the ASEAN grouping to continue to strengthen itself both individually and collectively.
These include pressing on with community building, maintaining regional peace and stability and strengthening ASEAN as an organisation.
Mr Lee said he is glad that almost 80 per cent of the ASEAN Economic Community blueprint has been implemented.
But he noted that the final twenty per cent will be the most sensitive and challenging.
So he urged the grouping to press on and seek win-win outcomes and rally public support for the goals and vision.
Mr Lee said the interests of the region continue to be best served by a neutral and united ASEAN with strong links with all its dialogue partners.
Turning to talks on the South China Sea disputes, he said ASEAN should continue to call for the early conclusion of a Code of Conduct.
