Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong praises Mendaki's contribution towards the Malay community's 'tremendous progress'

Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong says the Malay community in Singapore has made tremendous progress over the past three decades.

And he praised the Malay/Muslim self-help group, Mendaki, for its contributions in this progress.

Mr Lee said this in an interview with MediaCorp Malay News and Current Affairs, for a documentary on the 30th anniversary of Mendaki.

He said the achievements of the Malay community are made possible because of the programmes initiated by Mendaki.

These programmes address the community's specific problems, such as in education, and the struggles faced by low income and dysfunctional families.

Mr Lee noted Mendaki also had support from many different parties.

He urged self-help groups to take a multi-racial approach in helping the disadvantaged, even as they focus on their own communities.
