Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong calls for regional cooperation against cybersecurity threats
Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong says Asean must strengthen its defences and cooperate to deal with cybersecurity threats.
He was speaking at the opening of the 13th meeting of Telecommunications and Information Technology Ministers, or Telmin for short.
Mr Lee said ICT penetration has brought many benefits, but also some new challenges, as events in the past two weeks have shown.
Hackers have compromised websites in Thailand, the Philippines and Singapore.
Some people suspected of perpetrating the hacking incidents in Singapore have been arrested.
Mr Lee said the culprits' actions are malicious and harmful and cannot be condoned.
He added that citizens should also speak up against the culprits' actions.
Mr Lee said Asean should strengthen cooperation in ICT to enhance regional integration and create new economic opportunities.
He outlined three ideas.
One is for Asean to harmonise its mobile broadband services at the 700MHz spectrum.
Secondly, Asean should speed up the shift towards digital TV broadcasts.
And lastly, Mr Lee says there is a need to enhance the resilience of submarine communications cable systems.
