President Tony Tan appoints 74 Justices of Peace
President Tony Tan Keng Yam has appointed 74 Justices of Peace, or JPs, at the Istana this morning.
The ceremony was witnessed by DPM Teo Chee Hean and other dignitaries.
50 JPs were re-appointed, while 24 are newly-appointed.
The 74 JPs are appointed for 5-year term starting this month.
JPs are selected from outstanding Singaporeans who have made significant contributions in their professions, the public service, social services and the community at large.
As JPs, they serve as Visiting Justices of Singapore prisons, mediators or referees in the Subordinate Courts, or marriage solemnisers in the Registry of Marriages.
They may also perform the duties of the Magistrate conferred on them by any written law.
JPs are appointed by the President under Section 11 of the Subordinate Courts Act.
The Home Affairs Ministry says JPs have been an integral part of Singapore's system of governance even before its independence.
