SINGAPORE: They usually sit on opposite sides of the House, but come September 20, a team of parliamentarians will be taking to the football field together -- playing on the same side.

And it is all for a good cause.

“MPs from both the ruling party as well as the opposition party will come together,” said Teo Ser Luck, captain of the Parliamentarians Team -- who is also the Minister of State, Trade and Industry. “We have a parliament team that plays on a monthly basis -- and usually Edwin Tong plays up front; sometimes Tan Chuan-Jin plays on the left or right wing; while the likes of Pritam Singh, Zainudin Nordin, or whoever is available, take turns to be the playmaker.”

Mr Teo added that he hoped Minister for Communications and Information, Yaacob Ibrahim, will also join up with the team for the tournament.

“Yaacob plays goalie,” said Mr Teo. “I've already made the No. 1 jersey for him, and I’m hoping he has the time to come and play for us.”

The parliamentarians are one of four celebrity teams taking part in this year's "Football With A Heart" event.

The other celebrity teams comprise senior civil servants, business owners from the Association of Small and Medium Enterprises and members of the Japanese Association.

It is the largest corporate-level football charity fundraiser in Singapore and major companies are invited to take part in a friendly five-aside tournament.

This is the third time the event is being held, and it will be at the new National Stadium, where a record 60 corporate teams are expected to participate this year. Organisers hope to raise S$650,000 in aid of 10 beneficiaries.

So far, about 50 corporate teams have confirmed their participation.   - CNA/rw
