Parliament stressed the need for Singapore to continue to be a nation of opportunity for all
Parliament has stressed the need for Singapore to continue to be a nation of opportunity for all.
On the first day of debate on the President's address, MPs put forward suggestions to tweak the CPF system so that it can provide an adequate retirement income for Singaporeans.
MP for Choa Chu Kang GRC Zaqy Mohamad suggested the CPF Board introduce a Government-backed investment plan, one that tracks inflation, and offering interest rates higher than the Ordinary and Special accounts.
Other MPs said the Workforce Skills qualifications framework could be tweaked to focus on Professional, Managers and Executives and not just the rank and file.
They also stressed the importance of economic growth in ensuring jobs for all Singaporeans and to help those in the lower-income group.
MPs who spoke on the importance of constructive politics, agreed it is a safeguard for Singapore's future.
Opposition MP Low Thia Khiang says while he agrees this is the way forward, it's the outcome of the political process that's important.
As for MP for Sembawang GRC, Vikram Nair, he says constructive politics is about working together, not bringing down people who are trying to solve the problem.
